3 Tips on Giving Infertility Injections

Are you thinking about getting IVF treatment, but you are worried about the shots? Unfortunately the infertility injections, which are required to increase fertility and the amount of eggs that are released during ovulation, is one of the worst parts of the whole IVF process. Trust us, we know, we’ve been through it twice. Here are three tips to make the process easier.

Does it all work?
IVF stands for in vitro fertilization and this is scientifically proven to help couples with fertility problems to become pregnant and give birth to their own child (We are living proof that it works. We gave birth to twins). It usually takes a few cycles for the treatment to work, but the success rate that is involved with the treatment is getting higher each year.

1. Involve your spouse
Although needles are usually pretty high on people’s lists of fears, the injections that are given during IVF are safe. For many women the idea of giving themselves the shot is scary and very intimidating. In many cases the spouse is more than willing to assist. This way the spouse feels apart of the solution, feels involved, and remains committed to the process. Many women find it is less scary to have the spouse handle the needle. When you start with IVF treatment your doctor will teach you how to give the injections. Take your spouse to the doctor to get the same training you will get.

There are two types of injection that are given: intramuscular or subcutaneous. Intramuscular injections get injected into the muscle and subcutaneous are injected into just below the skin surface. Both types of injection are less painful than intravenous injections, which are given when you go for blood tests.

2. Numb the Spot
Find a quiet and calm place that you can do it, such as the bathroom or the bedroom. Some women like to numb the area with ice cubes or numbing patches that can be purchased from a pharmacy.

3. Remember the reason why—Your Baby
Use the dream of holding your child in your arms serve as motivation. Injections are part of the process of becoming pregnant. When you hold your baby in your arms, it will all be worth it and the short-term discomfort will be forgotten.
