Infertility Statistics

—Knowing the facts give us power.

Infertility might seem like a very rare occurrence to some people. With the boom in the population, it’s hard to think that there are couples experiencing difficulty with conceiving. The truth is, a lot of people are having serious problems with having a child of their own because of infertility issues.

It is estimated that there are 7.3 million women in this country (ranging from the ages of 15 to 44) who are unable to conceive due to different infertility complications. These women often feel alone with their situation because nowadays it seems that, for everyone else, getting pregnant is really easy. Some people even worry about unwanted pregnancies. What’s sad is these women are not aware of their infertility problems until the day they start building a family. There are even cases wherein fertility complications such as polycystic ovarian syndrome or PCOS appear even if a woman has gotten pregnant before.

There are a lot of other couples who go through fertility treatments in hopes of one day being able to produce an offspring of their own. In 2002, 11.9% or 7.3 million women, 15 to 44 years of age, were able to avail of infertility services. 4.8% have undergone a fertility test while 6.1% have received professional help. 5.5% of women underwent treatments to avoid mishaps in pregnancies such as a miscarriage. 3.8% of women received ovulation drugs and 1.1% underwent artificial insemination.

The sad part is 11.8% of women between the ages of 15 and 44 have damaged fecundity. This means even if they get pregnant, they cannot carry a baby to full term.

A woman’s age affects her ability to become pregnant. It decreases through time due to the loss of egg cells that comes along with ageing. 15.2% of childless women between the ages 35 and 39 received infertility treatments. 17.3% for women between the ages of 30 and 34 while only 2.9% for women 15-29 years of age.

27.4% of women are infertile by the ages of 40 and 44.  22.6% of women are infertile by 35 and 39 years of age.  16.9% of women are infertile by the ages of 30 and 34. And 11% of married women are infertile by the ages of 15 and 29. Studying these statistics show that age really is a big factor in a woman’s fertility. This does not mean that being infertile is a hopeless case. A woman experiencing infertility complications can undergo different kinds of treatments, choosing the best one most appropriate for her situation.

If a woman is about to undergo a procedure such as in vitro fertilization or IVF, it is recommended that the procedure is done while a woman is below 40. Statistics has shown that the success rate of IVF procedures drop as the patient gets older. A 31 year old patient has a success rate of 38%. A 39 year old has a success rate of 22%. When a patient is 43 years old or above, the success rate is less than 10%.

What older patients can do is to get an egg donor. Statistics show an increase in the success rate of up to 45% for IVF procedures using the egg of a younger woman. Women in their early 30’s have the best success rates for IVF procedures.

Using the knowledge from these statistics, women now have the information needed on determining what fertility treatment is right for them. Statistics are very important especially to very sensitive and serious conditions such as infertility.
